Care centre nurse to represent care homes in ground-breaking quality improvement initiative

Registered Nurse, Ginny Smith, who is responsible for quality and compliance for specialist neurological care provider PJ Care, has been selected to join the inaugural participants of a ground-breaking new initiative to improve the quality of care for patients in the NHS. Ginny is the only representative from the private sector in the founding cohort.

The Q initiative, run by independent health care charity the Health Foundation together with NHS England, will connect people dedicated to improving the quality of care across the UK.

The initiative will make it easier for people from all parts of the health system with expertise in quality improvement to share ideas, enhance their skills and introduce changes to make care better for patients.

There are 231 people in the founding cohort of Q. Ginny is the only representative from the private and care home sector.

Ginny said “I am delighted to have been chosen to join such an important initiative. It’s an honour to be the only representative for the private sector and and look forward to contributing to this important project from a nursing and residential care home perspective.

Ginny, who was nominated by the Royal College of Nursing, will join the first participants to design, refine and test Q during 2015. The initiative will then launch more widely in 2016, with an aim to recruit 5,000 participants by 2020.

In her role as General Manager Quality and Compliance for PJ Care, Ginny is responsible for ensuring the highest clinical standards are met within the company’s care homes. She is passionate about improving the experiences of the residents, their families and staff.

PJ Care’s Chief Executive, Johann van Zyl added “We are so proud of Ginny, being a founding members of the Q initiative is testament to Ginny’s commitment to raising quality standards and patient safety. All of our care centres have good CQC ratings and Ginny has been instrumental in helping us achieve this.”

Professor Martin Green OBE, Chief Executive of Care England the leading representative body for independent care services in England said “"It is a great credit to the quality of services at PJ care, that Ginny Smith has been selected to be part of the prestigious Q programme. Ginny is a respected and experienced professional who will bring a great deal of knowledge and expertise to this initiative”.
