This would prevent the kind of scandalously poor care of people with brain injury, as revealed last night in a BBC Newsnight film, he said.
Mr van Zyl said care and treatment provided by trained multi-disciplinary teams in specialist neurological centres should be on the care pathway for people with neurological conditions. He supported calls for further investment in brain injury rehabilitation.
PJ Care runs three specialist neurological care centres – two in Milton Keynes and Eagle Wood Neurological Care Centre in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. Eagle Wood is the only UK centre of its kind providing onsite care and treatment for all neurological care conditions.
Mr van Zyl said: “Every day at our three neurological care centres we see how specialist rehabilitation provided by a multi-disciplinary team provides top quality of care.
“Not only is such care the clinically most-effective solution for people with neurological conditions, it is also the most cost effective.”
“Although specialist rehabilitation may in the short term cost more to funders than going home, that person requires less support in the long run. This is when long-term savings are made.
“For this reason we support Professor Michael Barnes, chair of the UK Acquired Brain Injury Forum, when he calls for more investment in brain injury rehabilitation.
“Right now at Eagle Wood Neurological Care Centre we have a 21-year-old man who has been there since collapsing last year. He spent three months in a coma and suffered serious brain injury. When he arrived at Eagle Wood, he was unable to lift his head off his pillow.
“But 12 months later after specialist care and treatment this young man is now able to run outdoors with the support of physiotherapists.
“Such rehabilitation would never have been achieved so quickly and effectively had he been in a non-specialist home.
“PJ Care also supports NHS England’s 'Year of Care' initiative to enable a flexible and patient-centred distribution of funding.”
Sir Tony Robinson, ambassador of Alzheimer’s Society, in September praised standards of care at Eagle Wood Neurological Care Centre.
He stated: “I just wish Eagle Wood was replicated in every other town and city across the country.”
